Nov. 21, 2009 Call VB Contact Michael Stambaugh for more details - 386.481.2278 - BALTIMORE, Md. - The LadyCats of Bethune-Cookman Volleyball ran up against quite a challenge early Saturday afternoon at the MEAC Volleyball Championships, as they faced off with Maryland Eastern Shore. The MEAC Northern Division's top team put B-CU away in a convincing effort, winning 3-0, but although the Hawks dispatched the LadyCats quickly in the opening set, they didn't go away and battled it out in the remaining two sets before falling in scores of 25-10, 25-21, and 25-20. In the opening set, the Lady Hawks jumped out to a quick lead, but built an even stronger advantage as they outscored B-CU two to one as the set rolled forward. UMES stunned the LadyCats, forcing them to play from behind and putting them away on the heels of a mid-set 11-2 run, allowing UMES to take the early advantage by a score of 25-10. In the early going of the second set, B-CU traded scores with UMES, but faced a challenge as the Lady Hawks made a 5-1 run and get a jump out on top. As the set rolled, the LadyCats rallied and took a shot at a comeback, but it came just a little too late, as B-CU could not overcome the late four-point lead, finishing the set down 25-21. In the third set, UMES built a slight lead from the opening serve, but B-CU refocused their efforts to rally and first tie it up at 11 all, then claim a two-point lead. However, the joy was short lived, with UMES battling back and trading scores with B-CU, and eventually breaking out and finishing the set with a 5-2 run to win 25-20, and take victory in the match, 3-0. UMES finished the set hitting .270 as a team, led by the attack of Christine Edwards, who finished with 12 kills, and defensively registering 8 digs. Caylin Woodward topped the Lady Hawks defensively with 9 digs, while Bella Jade Romero recorded all but two of the team's assists, finishing with 38.
In their final match of the season, underclassmen showed bright future possibilities as they led the team offensively, topped by Kaiyana Johnson with 6 kills, followed by Krysta Gardner with 4 kills, while Julie Gibson and Jessica Wilson each had 3 apiece. Wilson and Shakhea Moore-Hagins led defensively, turning in 7 digs each. Daryl Rodriguez led the setters with 9 assists. The LadyCats finished the season 13-15 in the semifinals of the MEAC Volleyball Championships and recognize the efforts of their outgoing seniors, Chelle Ticeson, Daryl Rodriguez, and Shakhea Moore-Hagins, but can see a bright horizon with the talent that will return in the next season.
