Final Stats

Hampton, Va. - Morgan State University used 19 kills from Jeniqua Moran to eliminate Bethune-Cookman University on Friday afternoon in the first round of the 2007 MEAC Volleyball Championships at Holland Hall in Hampton, Va. The Bears finished off the Wildcats, 3-0 [30-17, 30-18, 30-22].

B-CU (8-16) tried to rally in each game as they have done all season long. A strong run here and there was just not enough today as a very physically-gifted MSU squad seemed to be in position all over the court.

All-MEAC performers Ester Johnson and Jeniqua Moran were as good as advertised as each collected a double-digit kills performance in the match.

Morgan State collected a .400 hitting percentage against the Wildcats in the match to become just the second opponent all season to match or eclipse the .400 percentage mark in attack percentage. Moran collected 19 kills to lead the Bears as she hit .500 on the day with seven digs and three blocks (two assists) to go along with a stunning hitting performance.

Bethune-Cookman was kept in the match by the efforts of Reina Carson who collected 10 kills--her second double-digit kills outing in as many matches. It was the fifth time this season that Carson has put up 10 or better kills in a match.

Danielle Goodrum also played well for the `Cats with eight kills and a team-high six digs, defensively. At the net, Julie Gibson collected the team's only block, while handing out 16 assists for the Wildcats. She ends the campaign with 579 assists as a freshman.

Gibson finished five (5) assists shy of Kumiko Chow's freshman-record 584 assists set last season in 2006.

But in the end, it was too much MSU (11-16) power as Esther Johnson chipped in with 13 kills and nine digs, while teammate Jentri Fullove added six kills on eight attempts out of her setter position. He posted 25 assists, mostly to Johnson and Moran.

Bethune-Cookman ends the season at 8-16, while falling in seven of their last 10 matches. They end the season on a three-game slide as well.
