Statesboro, Ga. - Bethune-Cookman College women's tennis opened up the season on the road today, but fell by a count of 5-2 at the hands of Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. The Wildcats swept the doubles competition, but could not get more than one (1) match in singles play over the Eagles. Bethune-Cookman (0-1) started off the match in good shape by taking all three doubles matches for the early 1-0 lead. The hardest match in doubles play came fat the No. 1 spot with the `Cats Olga Ruislova and sophomore Kiara Powell fighting past the team of Georgia Southern's Kristi Kegerreis and Heather Reynolds, 9-7. In singles action, sophomore Monika Musilova collected the only win for B-CC coming at the No. 5 position. Musilova, playing in her first-ever regular season match for the `Cats, breezed through the Eagles' Emma Knight with scores of 6-2, 6-2. However, that would be the only bright spot on the day for the Wildcats. GSU (3-4) lost just one other set on the day as Reynolds struggled in the second set against last year's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference [MEAC] Rookie of the Year Kiara Powell. Reynolds took the first set 6-1 before Powell battled back for a 7-5 win in the second. Reynolds eventually won the match with a third set score of 6-1. Another good match for the Wildcats came at the No. 1 position between Ruislova of B-CC and Molly Maddox of GSU. Maddox pulled out the dramatic 7-5, 7-5 win in an extraordinary match between two highly competitive opponents. Wildcats freshman Jeneice Ward played strong in the No. 6 position as she fell with scores of 6-4, 6-1 to the Eagles' Kelli Helms. Ward partnered up with Musilova at the No. 3 spot in doubles play for the 8-4 win over Georgia Southern's Jessica Matlosz and Jessica Fuller.
The Wildcats will try and get on the winning side of things tomorrow when they travel to Mercer University for another match slated for a noon start. |
