May 11, 2007 Baltimore, Md. - Christina Trimble and Holly Bussey blazed the way offensively for the Bethune-Cookman University softball squad throughout most of the year, and for their efforts they were selected to represent the Wildcats on this year's All-MEAC Softball Second Team as announced late Thursday evening in Baltimore, Md. Trimble, currently ranked atop the Bethune-Cookman batting average list (.420) was named yesterday to two (2) post-season honors lists with the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team, and now the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Second Team. Trimble, a junior from Riverside, Calif., sits tied for third on the team in homeruns (2) while leading the team in hits (71). She not only saw action in an unfamiliar position in the outfield to start the year, but has come on strong as of late in her normal position at third base for the `Cats. As for Holly Bussey, she is a fellow California girl hailing from Moreno Valley. Also a junior for the Wildcats, Bussey sits in third place on the team right now in the hits category with 67 to her credit. Bussey currently holds a .404 batting average with a team third-best tying spot in doubles (11); tied for third in homeruns (2) and is second in triples (3). On the season, Bussey saw action as a shortstop for the first time in her collegiate career, as well as a pitcher for the first time since her freshman year in HIGH SCHOOL. For Trimble and Bussey, this was their first-ever selection to the All-MEAC Team after nominations in 2005 and 2006. The MEAC Player of the Year award went to Maggie Wolfe of Hampton who picked up her second POTY award in as many years. She becomes the first back-to-back POTY member since Amber Jackson collected three straight from 2003-05. HU teammate Amanda Black collected the MEAC Pitcher of the Year while Courtney Young of Howard was named as this year's Rookie of the Year. The MEAC Coach of the Year honor was left with little doubt as the award went to the late Tiny L. Laster, Jr. of Hampton University. Just days after carrying the Lady Pirates to their first-ever undefeated season in MEAC play at 15-0, Coach Laster's fight with kidney disease came to a sad end on the morning of May 3 as the legendary coach passed away in his home in the Hampton Roads of Virginia. It would be Coach Laster's second Coach of the Year award in his MEAC career, and the first since the 1996 season when the Lady Pirates won their last MEAC title. B-CU will take on Norfolk State today at 10 a.m. in the first round of the MEAC Softball Tournament at the Randazzo Softball Park in Severn, Md.
