Daytona Beach, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman College jumped out to an early lead they would never relinquish as they edged Jacksonville University on Wednesday by a score of 4-2 at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Wildcats used three first inning runs to get out to an early lead ... and that would seal the deal for the `Cats against intrastate opponent Jacksonville. With the win, the `Cats broke their five-game losing streak from last weekend's GSU Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. B-CC (4-5) used a walk from Breanna Shaw and a single from Holly Bussey to set-up the first run of the game. That's when left fielder Christina Trimble stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single up the middle. Wildcats senior Shaterra Davis would later register a two-run scoring double to left field that brought around Trimble and Bussey on the play. However, on the same play, first baseman Brandi Holley tried to push the limits with an attempt to take home before she was gunned down on a relay that went from left field to shortstop to the catcher just in time. Bethune-Cookman led 3-0 after the first inning of play was in the books. The Dolphins of JU (2-8) answered back in the top-half of the second inning when pitcher Shannon Jensen got herself into scoring position with a lead-off double to center field, and then advanced to third via a sacrifice bunt from Kelly McKeon. Jensen would later score on a throwing error credited to the Wildcats outfield. The `Cats wasted little time jumping back on the board in the home-half of the second frame as Bussey's RBI single up the middle scored Robinson to put B-CC ahead 4-1. Jacksonville would tack on the final run of the game in the fourth inning when Jensen battled with B-CC starting pitcher Jessica Hurtado through eight pitches before connecting on her second homerun of the season straight over the centerfield wall.
Hurtado was relieved prior to the start fifth inning by freshman Lanaya Jenkins. Hurtado was touched for four hits and two runs (one earned) and fanned one batters. The win went to Hurtado to even her record at 2-2 on the year, while Jenkins collected her first save of the year. The loss went to JU's Jensen who dropped her record to 0-4 on the campaign. Jensen was the leading offensive performer for the Dolphins on the day with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate including two runs and a single RBI via the homerun shot in the fourth inning. Alexis Novak collected an RBI from her designated player position. As for the `Cats, they were led by Holly Bussey with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI and one run scored. Trimble had a 1-for-3 outing at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Bethune-Cookman College will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for the annual Worth Classic hosted by Florida Atlantic University. Other participating teams include James Madison, FAU, Illinois and Jacksonville. The `Cats will first take on James Madison on Friday at 4 p.m. |
