Statesboro, Ga. - Bethune-Cookman struggled to get the bats going on Saturday as they fell in the first game of the day to Samford University by a 5-1 decision at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga. as a part of the Georgia Southern Invitational. The `Cats are now 0-3 in the annual event. Samford's Susanna Meyer seemed untouchable for most of the day in the pitcher's circle as she limited Bethune-Cookman (3-3) to just three hits throughout the contest. Meyer also struckout four batters and walked two others. Samford (5-2) got on the board first in the opening frame as shortstop Liz Pearse double to right center and later scored on one of five (5) errors by the Wildcats defense in the game. The Bulldogs' Brittany Simao singled and later scored courtesy two B-CC throwing errors charged to the infield to make the score 2-0 leading into the bottom-half of the second inning. The Wildcats got their lone run of the game in the second inning when Shaterra Davis walked and junior transfer Brandi Holley singled to start off the inning. Davis was plated later in the frame when Lanaya Jenkins registered a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of Samford. The Bulldogs put the game away in the sixth and seventh innings when they poured on three insurance runs over the course of the two final frames. After collecting three hits in the game's opening two innings, the Wildcats of B-CC went down in order the rest of the way as Samford pulled out the win. The Bulldogs collected three doubles in the game, including one from right fielder Shelley Stanley who was 2-for-4 at the plate for the `Dogs. Designated hitter Amanda Barrs, Jeslyn Metcalf and Simao also collected two hits each, respectively. Simao was 2-for-3 with the bat with two runs scored and drawing one base on balls.
Jenkins, Holley and Ariel Robinson each chipped in for the three hits collected by the Wildcats. The loss went to B-CC junior Jessica Hurtado who lowered her record to 1-2 on the year, while Samford's Meyer upped her mark to 2-1 for the `Dogs. B-CC now has one more game against the loser of the Samford vs. Charleston Southern game tonight back at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga. Game time is set for a 4 p.m. start, but depends totally on the time of the previous contest's finish. |
