Nov. 6, 2007
DeLand, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman University played the most enduring golf of the 2007 campaign on Monday and Tuesday, walking away with a tie for fourth place in the Hatter Fall Classic at the Victoria Hills Golf Course in DeLand, Fla. With a strong and impressive performance from sophomore golfer Maria Garrido, the Wildcat women's golf team was able to salvage a Top five finish after one of the worst performances by all golfers on the 2007 fall campaign. According to head coach Gary Freeman, he knew this tournament was going to a real test for his women's team because they had not performed in an endurance type of event all year long. Garrido's 228 (+12) was the best performance of her career so far at Bethune-Cookman. She collected rounds of 78, 77 and 73 as she got hotter each round. P. Phol-uayporn of Florida Atlantic was simply sizzling as she collected a 217 to finish one-over par for the tournament on rounds of 69, 73 and 75. B-CU's Becky Dowell continued her streak of Top 15 finishes with a tie at 12th place as she scored a 232 (+16) on rounds of 80, 79 and 73 to get stronger with each round. Juniors Fern Grimshaw (237) and Emma Tayler (238) finished in the Top 25 for the Wildcats as well. The surprise of the tournament was that of freshman Kimberly Wong who shot a 242 (+26) to collect her lowest performance in any event of the season. Wong had a streak of four consecutive tournaments for which she had finished in the Top five individual golfers. She collected rounds of 81, 80 and 81 as she seemed to struggle a bit with the three-round event at the very "hilly" Victoria Hills course. It was also the first time all season that Grimshaw and Taylor had collected +20 pr performances on the campaign.
Stetson was the top team for the event as they were also the host, shooting a 902 (+38). Behind them was Florida Southern, Florida Gulf Coast, B-CU and Florida Atlantic to round out the top five teams. Lauren Darnell of Stetson finished in second place amongst all golfers for the Hatters, while teammate Danielle Jackson assisted in the Top five. This was the last event for the B-CU women's team in the fall as they will now focus their efforts on the spring season which looks to be just as exciting with a strong group of golfers now ready and knowing what to expect on the collegiate level.
