SUMTER, S.C. - The Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman Bowling had a fruitful competition over the weekend as they continued the trend of team progress in each tournament. They traveled to South Carolina State for the final MEAC Southern Division tournament of the 2009-10 season. B-CU earned a record of 5-3 over the weekend, which allowed them to finish second.

The Lady Wildcats opened competition at the third and final MEAC Southern Division tournament, Saturday, in Sumter, S.C., beginning with Team Individual play. The Lady Wildcats set off the tournament with Norfolk State, defeating the Spartans 885-830, led by Kimberly Roe with 227 total pins and 199 pins from Chelsea Squillacote.

Next up, B-CU fell in back-to-back games, facing first SCSU and falling in a score of 859-850. The Lady Wildcats led the Bulldogs for the entire game, but an open tenth frame sealed B-CU's fate in the game, as SCSU had two bowlers pull three strikes in their final frame. Following the loss, B-CU's score dropped off a bit while facing Florida A&M and falling 890-794.

In the final game of the opening day, B-CU bounced back and defeated North Carolina A&T dropped the Lady Aggies 793-716, led by Kimberly Roe with 207, and Melonie Mitchell with 180. After defeating N.C. A&T, B-CU wrapped up the day with a record of 2-2 in Team Individual play.

Returning the second day, thirsty for more wins in Baker play, the Lady Wildcats opened with N.C. A&T, defeating the Lady Aggies in four straight games, 643-623. In the next match, B-CU took their only loss of the day, again falling to FAMU in four games 711-574. B-CU came back to make the next game a win, taking on SCSU, winning in four games, 661-627. In the final match, the Lady Wildcats stepped up their game to earn their highest Baker score of the day and defeat NSU in four games, 732-708.

In the midst of Baker competition, the coaching staff made the call to go to the reserves, and the decision paid off. B-CU went 3-1 on the day, playing multiple matches with four walk-ons and Kimberly Roe. Diante Blakey earned high praise from the staff for her performance in Baker play, said to have really only bowled three bad balls in her entire performance and stepped it up when called upon, despite limited playing experience this season.

The Lady Wildcats played extremely well as a team and improved in both scores and record on the last divisional tournament, which has become a trend in each tournament this season. The staff expects to see an even higher level of improvement as they come out of the semester break in 2010.

Kim Roe led the team to a 5-3 record and a second place finish in the tournament, also earning the top spot among all bowlers,  recording a total individual pinfall of 1026, and an average of 205.2 Melonie Mitchell recorded 799 pins and a 159.8, Chelsea Squillacote notched 703 pins and a 175.8 average, Jazmin Sutherland averaged 152.3 on 609 pins, Demara Marbra averaged 143.3 on 430 pins, Ypretycia Crumity averaged 152 on 304 pins, and rounding out the team, Diante Blakey collected 256 pins for a 128 pin average.

Now the Lady Wildcats (18-22, 12-12 MEAC) now settle into the semester break and close out 2009 on a high note. They will get back to work as school reopens in the new year, returning to competition on Jan. 29-31 in Reading, Penn., at the Kutztown University Golden Bear Invitational.
