Daytona Beach, Fla. - Morgan State University put five players in double figures to help lead the visiting Lady Bears past Bethune-Cookman University on Tuesday night by a score of 63-58 inside the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. In an arena that saw a tragic event just two nights prior as Javan Camon passed away from a fatal hit in a World Indoor Football League game for the Daytona Thunder, the arena that Bethune-Cookman calls a "home away from home" seemed a bit lower as many former B-CC (now B-CU) players are a part of the DB Thunder roster. But, somehow, the game had to go on--ironically, on the same spot that Camon's life was tragically taken from him less than 48 hours ago. Trailing by just three points at the half with a 28-25 score, B-CU (5-23, 2-15 MEAC) would spend much of the first part of the second half trying to figure out how to stop the Lady Bears from scoring. All-MEAC candidate Corin Adams did all she could for MSU (16-11, 11-6 MEAC) as she vaulted the Lady Bears out to a 41-32 advantage with 12:25 left in the game. Moments later, Shana Phillips of MSU would drain one of her two (2) three-pointers of the game to put MSU up 44-32. That was the largest lead of the game as B-CU never allowed the Lady Bears above a seven-point advantage throughout the first stanza. Sophomore Traci Fountain played her part beautifully on the night as she hit a three-pointer to diminish the double-digit deficit. Fountain ended the game with a game-high three (3) three-point field goals. Teammate and freshman Euneshia Proctor hit a three-pointer after that, and the MSU lead was cut to 46-42. That's when the game was tickling a 5-to-6 point deficit every trip down the court, but MSU's Whitney Johnson and Britney Griffin found ways to score in the clutch to keep the Wildcats at bay for the win. The lead would swell back up to 11 on Johnson free-throws for the Lady Bears before B-CU's Proctor and Fountain connected on back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead once again. The game was iced away at the free throw line as MSU escaped with the win, and B-CU was denied the upset attempt.
The Lady Bears of MSU were led on the night by five (5) players in double figures, including Adams and Johnson with 12 points each, respectively. Phillips added 11, while Shalane Price got 10 points of her own. The best performance for the Lady Bears came from Griffin on the inside with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double performance. Simply said, "Griffin went to work." The Wildcats were paced by a career-high 22 points off the bench for Traci Fountain, and a near double-double event for Euneshia Proctor off the bench. Proctor added a season-high 17 points and nine rebounds in a losing effort. The Wildcats will close-out the season on Saturday, Mar. 3 when they play host to intrastate rival Florida A&M University at 2 p.m. inside Moore Gymnasium. This is also a very special day as the `Cats ay good-bye to a group of seniors on "Senior Appreciation Day" in Daytona Beach. Departing as seniors from the program are Sabrina Boykin, Cassandra Calcagno and Tristan McCray. The line-up, as usually done for Senior Day ceremonies, won't have to be tweaked on Saturday as each student-athlete is already a part of the B-CU starting rotation for third-year head coach Francis Simmons. |
