Dover, Del. - Bethune-Cookman College was unable to overcome a barrage of points from a variety of ways on Monday evening as they fell to Delaware State University by a score of 73-39 at Alumni Hall in Dover, Del. The loss assured B-CC the #11 seed in next week's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference [MEAC] Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. Trailing 40-22 at the half, Bethune-Cookman (5-22, 3-14) tried to instill the inside game against the smaller Delaware State (16-12, 11-6 MEAC) squad. The `Cats used Cassandra Calcagno to mix it up in the middle, and lay-ups were a plenty ... but the Hornets of DSU used outside shooting from multiple players to make their point in the victory. When Monique Bassett's lay-up fell through the net with 11:41 left in the game, DSU went on a powerful 17-6 run to end the game. In fact, B-CC only managed one (1) field goal over the course of the latter part of the game in the second stanza. B-CC went the final 6:36 without a field goal, but the Hornets accounted for two (2) three-pointers and a bushel of outside shots from Ashlee Burbage, including her only three-pointer of the game. The `Cats may have won the battle of the paint with a 20-16 edge in scoring, but the Hornets took the bench scoring with a whopping 33-8 advantage in that department. Euneshia Proctor accounted for four of those points off the bench for B-CC. DSU's Katreem Palmer seemed to be the turning point in the game as she was all over the place with 14 points and seven rebounds, as well as two steals on the defensive end of the court. Bethune-Cookman was led by Cassandra Calcagno with nine points and four rebounds to go along with her two blocks and three steals. Junior forward Natasha Ferguson and All-MEAC candidate Tristan McCray each chipped in with eight points a piece.
This was the first game since Nov. 24, 2006 against Louisiana-Lafayette that no one scored in double-digits for B-CC. Against the Rajin' Caguns, Freda Elston and McCray led all scorers with five points each, respectively. Palmer's 14 points and Jameka Smith's 10 points were enough to lead the Hornets in the scoring department. Smith also added three assists from her guard position. B-CC took a brief 3-2 lead at the start of the game as Natasha Ferguson connected on a free throw and McCray hit a jumper from the baseline to have the lead. The game was tied by DSU's Raquel Collier on free throws ... before the Hornets took the lead one charity shot after that by Collier. The Hornets would never trail again in the game. The `Cats will be back in action again on Wednesday as they take on conference foe Morgan State in a MEAC contest at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 5:30 pm. |
