Jacksonville, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman College got 15 points from two players in order to earn their first road victory of the year knocking off the University of North Florida by a score of 58-42 inside UNF Arena in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday night. Tristan McCray and Sierra McKnight both scored 15 points in leading Bethune-Cookman (4-9) to a key non-conference victory. This was the second game of this year's two-game series as B-CC swept the series after winning last month's affair by almost the exact same score, 57-40. The first 20 minutes of play were a tight affair as the teams headed to the locker room tied at 24-24. UNF (3-11) was aided by the three-ball in the first half as the Ospreys connected on three (3) three-point shots. They finished with four on the night, while Denisia Andrews hit two of those shots from long range. In the second half, the Wildcats opened up the half on a 9-1 run to push out to an eight point advantage at 33-25. The stifling Wildcats defense pressured the Ospreys all night long, limiting them to just one (1) field goal over the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the second stanza. McCray and McKnight scored all but three of the Wildcats first 14 points of the second half in their big run. Traci Fountain pitched in a three-pointer--one of her seven points on the night, and Natasha Ferguson added a lay-up to help the `Cats push the lead out to as many as 13 points at 42-29 with 7:46 left in the game. The Ospreys rallied behind Andrews and Jennifer Bowen to try and keep UNF in it, but the lead never slipped below a double-digit margin the rest of the way. Though turning the ball over 25 times in the game, B-CC was able to avoid baskets the other way, and instead take advantage of 23 UNF turnovers. The `Cats scored 22 points off UNF miscues, while also out rebounding their opponents from the state's biggest city, 43-30. B-CC won the battle of the boards last time by just five rebounds.
Bethune-Cookman, coming into the game ranked 324 out of 324 teams in free throw shooting, converted on 14-of-29 free throws, while UNF shot just 8-of-15 from the foul line. B-CC has now shot 32-of-63 from the free throw line in their last two contests. UNF was led on the night by Andrews with 12 points, four assists and six steals. Bowen also entered the double-digit scoring column with 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. As for B-CC, McKnight and McCray ended the night with 15 points a piece. Ferguson led the squad with eight rebounds, while Sabrina Boykin led the team with a season-high six assists. Bethune-Cookman will now look to keep their two-game winning streak alive when they host North Carolina A&T in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest on Saturday at 2 p.m. inside Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach. |
