Daytona Beach, Fla. - The University of North Florida was too much for Bethune-Cookman University on Thursday afternoon, cruising to a 6-1 victory in men's tennis at the City Island Tennis Complex in Daytona Beach, Fla. UNF (11-7) started off with a complete sweep of the doubles point, allowing B-CU (8-12) just six points combined in the three sets. B-CU's duo of Jerome Ward and Edson Luiz Gomez fought hard in the No. 3 position, but were eventually downed by UNF's power from Eduardo Pereira and Elad Gabay, 8-3. The Wildcats also had a good showing from Yannick Jackson and Stefan James in the No. 2 position as they battled to an 8-2 loss at the hands of the Ospreys' team of Matias Sigal and Glen Marshall. In the singles matches, B-CU senior Thabani Sithole improved his record to - on the year with a 6-4, 6-4 win over UNF's Matias Sigal at the No. 1 position. It would, however, be the only victory of the day for the Wildcats in singles play. UNF took 6-0 wins in five of the next 10 sets in the No. 2-6 positions. Jerome Ward fought hard for the `Cats in the No. 3 spot with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Javier Ferrin. Christian Cruz also played tough at the No. 2 position against UNF's Pereira, but ultimately fell by scores of 6-0, 6-2. B-CU gets back to the courts this Saturday, Apr. 7 when they play host to rival Florida A&M in a key Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match. This match will ultimately decide where the Wildcats will be seeded going into the upcoming MEAC Tournament. Admission to the match is absolutely free, and all are invited to come out to the City Island Tennis Complex to cheer on the `Cats.
