Norfolk, Va. - Norfolk State University abruptly ended Bethune-Cookman's two-match winning streak on Friday with an emphatic 6-1 victory at the NSU Tennis Complex in Norfolk, Va. The match was a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest, and the only meeting between these two teams this season.

NSU (9-2, 6-1 MEAC) swept through the doubles matches with ease in order to grab the 1-0 advantage right off the bat, so to speak.

The Spartans' duo of Miroslav Vlcek and Petr Krakora knocked off the team of B-CU's Thabani Sithole and Christian Cruz at the No. 1 position, 8-3. The only other close match came at the No. 3 position that saw NSU's Pavel Suchy and Roman Castillo defeat Jerome Ward and Edson Luiz Gomez, 8-4.

In singles action, B-CU (8-10, 5-3 MEAC) grabbed their only point at the No. 3 position as Jerome Ward defeated Roman Castillo on scores of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a great match.

However, that was the only bright spot for the Wildcats as Thabani Sithole lost his second conference match of the year with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Miroslav Vlcek at No. 1 play.

The Spartans collected straight-set wins the rest of the way, including a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 6 position where B-CU's Edson Luiz Gomez was unable to get past NSU's Bogdan Yordanov.

Another great match occurred at the No. 5 position where Pavel Suchy of the Spartans held off a resurgent Yannick Jackson on scores of 6-4, 6-4.

Before the loss today, the `Cats had won five of their last six conference matches dating back to the MEAC Round-Up just over a month ago in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman will get back to action next Tuesday, Mar. 27 when they host the University of Delaware at 1 p.m. The match will take place at the City Island Tennis Complex in Daytona Beach, Fla.
