Daytona Beach, Fla. - The Bethune-Cookman College men's golfers didn't start the season as hot as expected over the weekend as they finished tied for fifth place in the annual Bethune-Cookman College Spring Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla. The efforts of Carl Corbin weren't enough over the weekend as B-CC didn't get the best performance from three golfers expected to be very good in their careers. All in all, it just wasn't a typical B-CC weekend of golf from the Gary Freeman coached Wildcats ... at all! Corbin finished tied for fifth in the tournament alongside Florida A&M's James Petty. Carl Corbin shot 152 for the weekend on scores of 74 (Saturday) and 78 (Sunday). However, no other B-CC men's golfer finished in the Top 25 of the event ... very rare for the three-time Minority Golf Champion Wildcats. "Carl was our best performer over the weekend, and he gave us his same consistent swing and stroke that he always does," stated head coach B-CC Gary Freeman. "He'll finish the season off really well, and he kicked off his spring just right. We are hoping that he can keep it up, and hopefully deliver just as he always does the rest of the way." Jamie Montgomery of Savannah State, and Joshua Vogler of MEAC newcomer Winston-Salem State tied for the lead after day two of the tournament. Montgomery edged out Vogler in a play-off hole to take the individual top honors. David McAndrew (Stetson), Andrew Storm (Florida Atlantic) and the tie between Petty and B-CC's Corbin rounded out the top five competitors. Stetson University from nearby DeLand, Fla. took home the top team prize while Rollins finished just behind them. Florida Atlantic finished up third; Savannah State in fourth; and B-CC and Lewis University tied for fifth, respectively.
The Wildcats' Daniel Venema was the second leader for B-CC as he shot a two-day total of 164 (85/79) for a tie in 28th place. B-CC's Juan Ronderos shot a 165 for a tie in the 30th position. But it may have been the disturbing, inconsistent play of newcomer Troy Coker and sophomore Chris Dunn that upset head coach Gary Freeman more than ever. "They were inconsistent, and had some problems finding the greens and holding onto their golf balls," explained Freeman. "Our guys like [Gregory] Goad and Troy [Coker] just didn't have it this weekend, and we are going to get back to practice in order to eradicate those mistakes." Coker finished with a 167 for the weekend as he struggled to find the greens, while Goad just didn't seem to have his normal putting prowess. As for Chris Dunn, he ran out of golf balls for an automatic disqualification. The `Cats will get back to the links on Mar. 7-9 when they travel to Port St. Lucie, Fla. for the St. John's River College Tournament. For more information on that event, please contact the Bethune-Cookman College Office of Sports Information at (386) 481-2206. "Carl performed very well down there in Port St. Lucie last year, and we will be riding him again this year," expressed Freeman. "He is going to be looking for a top spot that weekend, and hopefully our other guys will be right there to make their run for medal contention as well. We are going to be ready for that weekend's tournament." |
