Defensive stands in the fourth quarter and early offense in the first half led the Wildcats to a 21-10 win at Howard Saturday. B-CU evens its 2009 season record at 5-5, winning for the fifth time in six games and the ‘Cats are now 4-3 in MEAC play entering the season finale next Saturday vs. FAMU in the Florida Classic.

 

"The kids have stayed focused since the early season and I am proud of them," said B-CU Head Coach Alvin Wyatt. "The effort of the defense was outstanding in the game. The overall belief in our program and the fans support has been outstanding," said Coach Wyatt.

 

First Quarter

 

Wildcats Take Early 7-0 Lead – 78 yard Pass Play Keys Opening Drive


 

 

B-CU’s first drive resulted in a three-yard Jameel McCleod touchdown run capping a 6-play, 95 yard drive.  The big play in the drive was a 78 yard Maurice Francois to Ali Green catch and run down to the Bison three-yard line.

 

James Blocked Punt Leads To Second TD – Rhodes 19 Yard TD Run

Special teams came up big with the first punt block of the season for the ‘Cats by Randy James.  DB-converted RB Daniel Rhodes ran 19 yards for a touchdown on his first rushing attempt of the season.

 

Second Quarter

 

Defensive stops highlighted the second quarter in the ball game. Howard had its top drive of the first half driving to the B-CU 24 yard line with 7:51 to play in the half . Bison PK Dennis Wiehlberg kicked a 41 yard field goal to make the score 14-3.

 

B-CU had a 60 yard drive down to the Howard four yard line in the final minutes, but a Fred McCaskill fumble ended the drive with 0:20 seconds remaining to keep the halftime lead 11 points at the break.

 

First half stats – B-CU outgained the Bison 193-118 in total offense. McCleod was the ‘Cats rushing leader in the first half with 34 yards on four carries and Green’s 78 yard pass receiving yards led the Wildcats.

 

Third Quarter

 

The Wildcats went ahead 21-3 with Fred McCaskill running 12 yards for a touchdown with 10 minutes remaining capping a 57 yard ‘Cats scoring drive in the third quarter.

 

A Michael Adams interception gave the Bison a short field to work for inside the 30 yard line of the Wildcats, but the B-CU defense stopped Howard and forced a punt.

 

Fourth Quarter

 

Following punts, Howard’s RB Terrance Leffall scored on a seven yard run to put the Bison within 21-10. Howard went 41 yards in 7 plays for its touchdown.

 

Punts inside the B-CU five-yard line twice gave the Wildcats tough field position throughout the fourth quarter.

Senior defensive tackle Dexter Jackson recovered a Howard fumble in the final minute to preserve the 21-10 win – B-CU’s fourth road win of the 2009 season and setting up the Florida Classic matchup next Saturday, 2:30 p.m. vs. FAMU at the Orlando Citrus Bowl (On ESPN Classic TV).

 

The Wildcats gained 283 yards to Howard’s 233 in the contest. B-CU rushed for 125 yards and threw for 158. QB Matthew Johnson was 6-8 for 80 yards and B-CU’s rushing leader was Jameel McCleod with 45 yards on five carries.
