Daytona Beach, Fla. (AP) - Kyle Matheney's only points of the game - three free throws in the final 33.8 seconds - sealed Florida Gulf Coast's 60-57 win over Bethune Cookman on Monday night. Casey Wohlleb's 15 points led Florida Gulf Coast in the school's Division I debut. Landon Adler added 12 points and Adam Liddell scored 10. John Holmes led Bethune-Cookman (0-2) with 19 points and Dewayne Pettus scored 12. Pettus was playing in his first game of the season for B-CU after missing Saturday's affair with Warner Southern due to a family emergency. Matheney's free throws stopped a comeback by the Wildcats, which trailed by 14 points with 8:34 to play. Bethune-Cookman went on an 18-3 run and took the lead by one point, 52-51, on a Holmes free throw with 2:41 left. Liddell responded with an inside basket and two quick free throws to put the Eagles back up, 55-52, with 1:44 in the game. Bethune-Cookman closed it to one point two more times, but Matheney's free throws sealed it for the Eagles. Bethune-Cookman fell to 0-2 on the season for just the first time since the beginning of the 2003-04 campaign. B-CU would finish the year 8-21 in that season ... the second year for B-CU head coach Clifford Reed, Jr. The Wildcats will travel to Purdue on Thursday for a game slated to begin at 7 p.m. (EST) in West Lafayette, Ind. The game will be telvised by the Big Ten Sports Network regionally throughout the Midwest.
