Daytona Beach, Fla. - Four free throws and a half-court shot capped off what was a thrilling 49-48 victory for Bethune-Cookman College over upset-minded University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Monday night at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. With three seconds left in the game, B-CC's Damitrius Coleman raced up the court and was inadvertently fouled by UMES' Shondale Robinson with just one second showing on the clock. As Coleman toed the line and drained the first free throw, a controversial issue arose in the form of a technical foul called on a UMES player. Corey Brown was whistled for the technical foul, allowing Josh Cummings (Chicago, Ill.) to drain back-to-back free throw to put Bethune-Cookman (7-18, 5-10 MEAC) up 48-45 with one more foul shot coming for Coleman. Coleman hit the foul shot, and that all but wrapped up the game for the `Cats. On the ensuing inbounds play, Corey Brown hit a 55-foot shot at the buzzer for UMES (3-23, 0-14 MEAC) which would have won the game for the MEAC winless Fighting Hawks ... if not for the technical foul. Neither team led by more than six points in the second half. UMES went up by five (33-28) with 13:15 left in the second half following a Brown three-point shot from the left side. Jimmy Hudson then connected on one of his two (2) three-point baskets in the game, added a five-point swing by B-CC's Dewayne Pettus to allow the Wildcats to go on a 15-4 run that put them up 41-35 with 8:20 remaining. The Fighting Hawks would regain the lead at 45-43 with 1:33 left when Aleksander Popovic hit a jumper in the paint and a free throw by Antonio McMillion. B-CC tied the game at 45-45 with 38 seconds left when Pettus followed up an Aaron Nelson missed lay-up with a fierce put-back dunk.
In a game that saw 11 lead changes and eight ties, both teams shot almost the exact same percentage with the Hawks shooting 39.1 percent to the `Cats 38.3 percent. B-CC won the battle of the boards 32-30, but the `Cats committed 17 turnovers to the Hawks 16. Both teams collected 12 points off turnovers. UMES controlled the points in the paint 28-16, while the `Cats outscored the Hawks 26-0 in bench scoring. The Hawks of UMES were led on the night by three players in double figures, most importantly McMillion's 17 points and four rebounds. Corey Brown and Ed Tyson each posted 12 points, respectively. As for the Wildcats of B-CC, they were sparked by Dewayne Pettus with 16 points and five rebounds on 7-of-9 shooting from the field with one (1) three-point basket. No other Wildcat player registered over six points in the contest as the scoring was spread out evenly throughout the game. Next up for the Wildcats, a visit from former coach Horace Broadnax and the Savannah State University Tigers on Wednesday night inside Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach. The Tigers won the only other meeting between these two teams this year by a score of 52-49 in Savannah, Ga. |
