2007 season ... • Still had a promising season as a sophomore, finishing up fourth on the team in batting average with .284 on the year; Slugged out an average of .317 against conference opponents • Tied for second-highest on the team in runs scored with 43 • Pounded out a team fourth-highest 63 hits, including a team-high tying 15 doubles and two triples • Swiped 14 stolen bases in 22 attempts • In the field, he posted a fielding percentage of .968 with 119 putouts from his centerfield position • Posted 29 RBI at the plate

2007 highlights ... • Started off the season 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four putouts at Jacksonville (2/2) • Was 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI in the second game of a doubleheader sweep over Mercer (2/10); Was 2-for-3 the next day against the Bears (2/11) • Went 2-for-5 with three RBI against Michigan (2/25) in Port St. Lucie, Fla. • Drove in a career-best four RBI against Maryland Eastern Shore (5/17) where he went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored three times • Also collected a 3-for-5 day in the first game of a doubleheader sweep at Norfolk State (4/14) with two runs and two RBI • Stole a career-high four bases against Coppin State (4/21); Was 1-of-2 at the plate with a run and a RBI in that contest against the Eagles

2006 season ... • Played and started in 56 of the Wildcats 57 games at the centerfield position • Finished fifth on the team in batting average (.282), while also collecting the second-most plate appearances (206) • Led the MEAC in runs scored (57) • Picked up a team third-best 11 doubles on 58 hits, including two triples and three homeruns • Second on the team with 16 stolen bases • Collected a fielding percentage of .956 for the season with 107 putouts and two assists

2006 highlights ... • Picked up a season-best four RBI on two hits with two runs scored against Delaware State (May 20) at the MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, Va.; Finished that game a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate for the `Cats • Went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and hit a homerun to help the `Cats take one game against Oral Roberts (Apr. 2) • Hit the first homerun of his collegiate career in the first game of a three-game set at Oral Roberts (Mar. 31); Went 2-for-4 at the plate that game with one run and one RBI • Collected a season-high four hits on a 4-for-5 day at the plate for B-CC in the championship game of the MEAC Tournament against Maryland-Eastern Shore (May 21) • Collected four putouts and one assist at Ole Miss (June 2) in the NCAA Regional (Oxford, Miss.) • Batted .328 in conference play while posting 19 hits and crossing the plate 19 times for runs scored; plated nine runs in MEAC play as well

HIGH SCHOOL

• Earned the league's batting title as a senior with an average of .347 at the plate. • Recorded 14 stolen bases on 15 attempts ... picked-off just one time after a great dig-out by the second baseman. • Posted 17 RBI as a senior (2005), and 16 as a junior (2004). • Helped to lead Florida Air Academy to a perfect 23-0 record and a shot at the World Series in Puerto Rico under head coach Manuel Ruiz.

PERSONAL

José Ortiz is the son of José L. Ortiz and Araceliz Rivera ... he was born in the middle-eastern section of Puerto Rico in Caguas ... currently majoring in Business at Bethune-Cookman University ... wants to be good enough to win titles and enter the MLB Draft before departing from B-CU ... enjoys spending volunteer time at the Habitat for Humanities back home and in the state of Florida ... chose Bethune-Cookman because of the rich baseball heritage the school holds ... says his oldest brother has been the biggest athletic influence in his life because he is always there for him and advises him on whatever he is struggling with in life.
