DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. - Kevin Rono defended the home course for Bethune-Cookman Wednesday afternoon, winning men's individual honors at the university's inaugural cross country invitational. The sophomore from Kenya clocked a personal record on the 5K (3.1 mile) beach course with a time of 15:07.56 to head off Savannah State's Ruben Isreal-McBee (15:17.24) and Tyrone McCoy (15:18.61) . "We train on the beach in the morning and in the evening, so I'm used to running in conditions like this," Rono said. "This was our meet and that gave me an extra push to do my best." After Rono claimed individual honors, Savannah State runners took the next five places to win the men's team title. The Tigers finished with 20 points, followed by B-CU with 44 and Florida A&M with 69. Curtis Riggins joined Rono in the top ten, finishing seventh in 15:52.40 Other B-CU times: Eric Cray (18th 19:12.10); Tavares Harris (12th, 16:31.35); Stephon Pamilton (13th, 17:23.71); La'quan Howard (15th (18:07.06) and Robert Horton (16th, 18:11.61).
In the women's race, Florida A&M swept the top three places and four of the top for team honors. Led by Chandelic Jackson's winning time of 17:52.44, the Rattlers scored 18, Savannah State 44 and Bethune-Cookman 69. Freshman Ileis Figueroa broke the Rattler domination of the top five by finishing fourth in 18:27.47 Other B-CU times: Alexys Lewis (12th, 20:42.85); Latorria Grier (13th 20:44.35); Lashondra Wilborn (16th,22:47.31) Taneika Flowers (18th 23:35.18) and Yolanda Rumph (19th, 27:32.02).
