Coral Gables, Fla. - Several season-bests and a few personal bests were accomplished Saturday as Bethune-Cookman University track & field continued towards their upward scale at the Miami Elite Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla.

In the women's events, Teanne Sergeant ran a season-best time in the 400 Meter Dash with a finish of 57.93 seconds. That would earn her a tie at the 15th position for the event.

Monique Bassett continued to gain strength and improve in the Javelin Throw as she collected a season-best distance of 36.51m (119-09) to finish at fifth place overall.

In the relay events for the women, the B-CU 4x100 Meter Relay squad finished seventh overall behind the team of Melissa Scott, Monique Scott, Samantha Shade and Teanne Sergeant. Together, the group collected a time of 47.70 seconds.

"The women are continuing to improve, and I'm really proud of Teanne [Sergeant] for earning yet another season-best," stated B-CU head coach Garfield Ellenwood.

On the men's side, Craig Johnson came that much closer to qualifying for the NCAA Regional in the Shot Put competition with a throw of 14.42m (47-03.75). Johnson looks to become the second NCAA Qualifier in as many years for the Wildcats, and the first under Coach Ellenwood, after Louis Brown collected an Indoor qualification in the Triple Jump last year (2006). Johnson also finished fourth in the Discus Throw event with a distance of 45.74m (150-01).

"It's great to see Craig [Johnson] qualify for the Shot Put because he has worked very hard since we've gotten here," explains Ellenwood. "He has a great future ahead of him, and we are looking forward to having him at the MEAC Championships."

In other action, Curtis Marshall registered a personal-best time of 10.84 seconds in the 100 Meter Dash while placing 16th for the event. He also finished 17th in the 200 Meter Dash with a season-best mark of 22.06 seconds.

Meanwhile, Harold Rose, Jr. continues to torment the B-CU record books with a personal-best mark in the 110 Meter Hurdles, collecting a time of 14.84 seconds to place 14th overall.

The 4x100 Meter Relay squad also collected a team season-best time of 42.02 seconds with a sixth place finish. The team of Curtis Marshall, Varney Saidu, Jarred Lawson and Harold Rose did the leg work.

"We're moving forward at a rapid rate, and my staff and I are looking forward to the MEAC Championships next month," admits Ellenwood. "The men are really improving well, and the women are doing the same. This is going to be a great end of the season if we just continue to work hard."

The Wildcats will now prepare for the national stage as they get ready to travel to the most historic track & field showcase in all the land ... The Penn Relays. The annual event takes place on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field from April 26-28, and showcases some of the best high school, collegiate, amateur and professional track & field athletes in the world.

"I just want the men to compete well at the Penn Relays, and see what kind of competitor we want to become here at Bethune-Cookman University in the near future against some great athletes out there today," states Ellenwood. "I want us to collect a Regional time, and continue to work on getting to the national scene here in Daytona Beach."
