Chapel Hill, N.C. - Improvements seem to happen every single day at Bethune-Cookman College in the sport of track & field, and this weekend was no different. B-CC had one personal-best and a season-best on the women's side of the track. Meanwhile, the men showed the most promise of any other competition according to head coach Garfield Ellenwood. Bethune-Cookman used a slew of Wildcat football players in order to perform well on the track and in the field. Phillip Kirkland competed for the first time in the Men's 60 Meter Dash as he collected a time of 7.21 seconds. Curtis Marshall, also competing for the first time, collected a time of 7.25 seconds for the event. Over in the Men's 200 Meter Dash, Florida speed was back on display as Marshall finished in 12th place with a time of 23.50 seconds, while teammate Jarred Lawson (first competition) finished in 15th place with a time of 23.95 seconds overall. Both Harold Rose, Jr. and Damarius Carroll qualified in the Men's 60 Meter Hurdles as it was the first qualifying time all season for either the men or women in a preliminary event. "I was very happy with the way the men performed this weekend, and I love the way they are working harder each and every time they step onto the track," states B-CC head coach Garfield Ellenwood. "The football players, or should I say track athletes, made me very proud as they stepped right and just used their natural ability to perform extremely well. I look forward to coaching them the rest of the Indoor and hopefully Outdoor season." After qualifying, Carroll and Rose both finished with respectful times. Carroll finished with a time of 8.49 seconds, and Harold Rose Jr. finished in the top five with a finishing mark of 8.40 seconds.
Richard Woodbury picked up a seventh place finish in the Men's Long Jump with a distance of 6.53m (21-05.25) covered, while Rose finished just behind him with a mark of 6.46m (21-02.50). In the women's events, it was Britney Gibson who set a personal best in the Triple Jump as she collected a second place finish with a leap of 11.66m (38-03.25). Gibson also competed in the 200 Meter Dash. Tiffany Gordon also set a record of her own as she beat out her seasonal best performance in the 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:24.03--good enough for ninth place overall. Gordon would finish ninth in the 3000 Meter Run as well. Samantha Shade was equally impressive for the women as she finished fifth overall in the Triple Jump with a leap of 11.41m (37-05.25). "The women are solid now, and I am really looking forward to seeing what they can do in the MEAC Indoor Championships next weekend," admits Ellenwood. "We are going to take a small group with us to Maryland, and we'll just compete hard like we have all season and try to get ready for the outdoor season. I'm looking forward to a good showing, and then we'll see what we have to work towards for the future." The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships for the indoor season will be held at the Prince George's Sport and Learning Complex in Landover, Md. The event will take place from Feb. 16-17. For more information on the event, please locate your internet browser to www.MEACsports.com. |
