JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman Track & Field opened competition, Friday, at the Niswonger Invitational at the Memorial Center, on the campus of East Tennessee State University. B-CU faces a huge field in this weekend's meet, with over 50 universities in attendance. The Wildcats turned in some solid finishes in the few events with finals on day one, while qualifying three for finals performances in tomorrow's competition.

Leading the team on the first day, Ron Danielle Williams collected B-CU's first points, finishing second in the women's shot put. Although eventually slipping behind Wilamena Hopkins of Alabama, it came down to the last throw to decide the winner. Williams threw a distance of 14.45m (47-05.00 ft.) to earn the silver in today's final. Maketa Ruffin tied for tenth place with a distance of 12.29m (40-04.00 ft.).

Analisa Austin turned in a qualifying time of 7.67 seconds in the 60m dash, moving on to tomorrow's final. Finishing next for B-CU in the event, Alphedellia (Apple) Harris crossed the line at 7.97.

Also notching a top-ten finish in the field events, Britney Gibson finished seventh in the women's triple jump finals, leaping a distance of 10.47m (34-04.25 ft.).

On the men's side, B-CU earned two qualifications in the 60m dash, led by Eric Cray, finished in a time of 6.90 seconds. Also qualifying for tomorrow's final, Chris Jackson turned in a finish of 6.99.

Although no other Wildcats qualified, several performed well in their respective events. Topping the team in the women's 200m dash, Alphedellia Harris finished with a time of 25.86. In the women's 400m dash, LaShondra Wilbon led with a 60.37 performance. Ryan Sanders topped B-CU in the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 9.78.

In men's events, Devon Creary topped the Wildcats in the 200m dash, turning in a time of 22.47 seconds. Marcell Keeling took the team's top spot in the 400m dash with a time of 50.07. D.J. Howard finished with a time of 8.81 in the 60m hurdles. Richard Carter led B-CU in the triple jump with a distance of 12.42m (40-09.00 ft.).

Although the B-CU coaching staff sees a lot of progress thus far in the season, they always have their eyes on progress and improvement. "We have more work to do to get everyone more competitive as the season continues," said Head Coach Donald Cooper, "We have some with injuries from the previous year that have affected our progress. Our athletes must persevere and meet the challenges expected or move aside for someone who will."

Heading into tomorrow's events, the Wildcats are looking forward to the finals of the 60m, in addition to the 800m, and the relay events.

"Continuity among the team is growing," added Cooper, "which is a very good sign for our progress."
